A Qualitative Study on Participation Experience of Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Disabled and Non-disabled Integrated Orchestra

This qualitative study aimed to understand the life changes of adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), based on the experience participating in a disabled and non-disabled integrated orchestra. The participants of this study were : one group contained 12 adolescents with ASD, 12 members of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and 12 parents and the second group comprised 12 therapeutic staff members of the Seoul Metropolitan Children¡¯s Hospital and the staff of Seoul Philharmonic. Individual in-depth interviews with participants and participant observations were conducted and analyzed. The following three themes emerged from the analysis. : (1) dreaming of orchestra, (2) the possibility seen from the wall of reality, and (3) creating a warm world together. Based on these themes, the adolescent with ASD had dreams and challenges, social connection, self-esteem, and ego-identity along with emotional change. In addition, this experience served as a momentum to members of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra develop personal maturity and the parents, who has the hope to move forward in the world. Based on the result of this study, recommendations were made regarding to effective application of the disabled and non-disabled integrated orchestra.
